4 Days Congo Gorilla & Nyiragongo trekking tour offered by Climbing Nyiragongo starts from Kigali Rwanda with the focus to explore Virunga National Park which is the largest Park within the Virunga Mountains that are shared between Rwanda, Uganda and democratic republic of Congo. Mountain Gorillas are hosted in all these destinations but the visit to Congo Gorillas is unique and classic one that can only be explore on Primate Safari to Congo with Climbing Nyiragongo.
Virunga National Park is managed by Virunga Foundation, hosting not only the Mountains Gorillas but also other primates like Chimpanzees, Golden Monkey and other monkeys that can be visited along side Nyiragongo Expeditions to spot the largest lava lake in the world with experienced mountaineering guides of Virunga Foundations.

Travelers that wish to start their trip from Goma International Airport check if Ethiopian airline has flight on the trip day so that we can process the Congo Visa on time.

Itinerary
Day 1: Kigali City tour and Transfer to Congo
Upon arrival at Kigali International Airport, you will be welcomed by the safari Guide of Climbing Nyiragongo who will brief you about the Kigali City tour and the entire travel plan during your adventure in Rwanda & Congo. You will go for Kigali City tour with key points of visit being the Gisozi genocide memorial site where you will learn a lot about the 1994 genocide and how it has helped transform the country, the main city market, artisan shops and the former presidential palace.
At around 11am , you will set off to drive to connect to Goma town in democratic republic of Congo, and proceed to Virunga National Park which is the oldest national park in Africa. You will be joined by Virunga Foundation security team in Goma , proceed to the accommodation .
Depending on the hotel where you spent the night, you will take breakfast and drive to the closest park headquarter for the briefing about the gorilla trekking.
Note: Virunga has over 5 points for gorilla trekking and all accommodations within Democratic republic of Congo, and there are 8 habituated gorilla groups in Virunga and the allocation of gorilla groups depends on your age and overall fitness.
The uniqueness of Congo gorilla trekking is that it can take the shortest time from 30 minutes to 2 hours to encounter the Mountain gorillas. Where you will be granted one hour with the gorillas in the wilderness once you have encountered them you have one hour to observe them and take photos/videos. Return to the lodge for refreshment and relaxation
Depending on the location of the Lodge , in the afternoon, you will visit the other primates like the monkeys and other birds within Virunga National park on Nature walk in Virunga.
Day 3: Mount Nyiragongo Hiking, Observing the Lava Lake and Overnight in Cabins
You will wake up very early to take breakfast in your Virunga hotel and wait to be picked up from your hotel by the team from Virunga. They will drive you to Kibati village which is the starting point for hiking, Registration of the hiking Mount Nyiragongo, Allocation of the porters and picking your Mikeno packages. Nyiragongo hiking takes between 4 to 6 hours and depends on the overall fitness of the group.
On reaching the top, you can get beautiful views of Goma town, the Virunga National Park, the Rwenzori mountains in Uganda, other Virunga Volcanoes, Lake Kivu, and lava lakes. Dinner and overnight will be on top of the volcano and in cabins.
Recommended : Always hire a porter to help you carry your luggage.
Day 4: Descend the Volcano – Transfer to Kigali for departure
After Morning breakfast at 5;30am , you will watch the last time the lava lake and start descending the volcano. It is the perfect time to get sustained views of the Virunga National Park and other landmarks.
Upon arrival at Kibati station , you will be welcomed by the Safari guide, transfer to Serena Hotel in Goma for refreshment and lunch , later cross to Rwanda and transfer to Kigali international Airport for flight back home.
Note:You will pay for the Rwanda Visa again to access Rwanda.
